How do you know if your bird is sick or hurt?

birds @ masking illnesses , injury, since hide predators. that's why if suspect isn't right, must take bird avian vet asap, because chances bird very sick if seeing symptoms. warning bird isn't active, sitting feathers fluffed out ( on bottom of cage) and/or sleeping lot way, during day when should active. birds need lot of sleep , have periods during day when take naps or quiet should active part of day , @ night well, long light on them. other answers correct, nasal or eye discharge not normal, change in dropping color/consistency ( although if feed lot of watery fresh foods etc. droppings become temporarily loose , liquid - key here temporarily). favoring of limb not putting weight on it, weird lumps or bulges, warning. how eat/drink, if drops off or bird becomes insatiable, warning well. excessive shivering, listing 1 side or other balance problems, weight loss, etc. that's why it's aware of bird , pay attention every day, handle bird every day etc. not interaction provides health monitor too. make sure have avian vet can go if looks wrong, many times bird has been sick awhile , showing because gravely ill. never wait !! reason. pays have avian vet culture , stool sample test once year make sure nothing going on can fixed.
