road dust

“and roads travel become divergent
, fade…fade dust, not memories,
or memories fade too, non use?”

once best friends travelled away.
bonds of land , school , homes
no longer held captive friendship
, such our friendship tested ,
faded…faded dust of roads.

met once, while back. drank beers,
reminisced, joked around, asked family,
if going through motions.
there no fire, no sense of lost.
had moved on our lives… apart.

saw vietnam, draft board saw that,
saw college. came frustrated,
graduated job. drive tractor,
own business. still smoke.
carry bypass scars remind me.

best friends once, strangers-
strangers sharing beers , old stories
walls absorb have
many have passed before in bar.

in hindsight it’s not memories fade; it’s
road dust- road dust- accumulates.
