japan posed serious threat prior attack on pearl harbor alliance nazi germany. allies had keep , promote china in war against japan because of heavy commitments in european , north african theaters of operations. united sates not prepared go war, although inevitable assist britain in europe. in interim, enacted lend lease act support allied countries actively fighting axis powers... buy time build military. nazi germany pushing eastward , japan pushing westward. india crucial last region separated nazis , japanese. fear if india fell japanese, there clear path between german , japanese occupation... , axis powers prevail. japan had occupied of major seaports , major regions in china. occupied french indonesia, siam, , beginning march burma when attacked pearl harbor. japanese occupation of rangoon stopped outside supplies burma road... last supply route in china. prior entering war, claire chennault acted advisor mme chang kai-sheck, head of chinese (kmt) air force. joseph stilwell acted military attache generalissimo chang kai-sheck. chief of staff, general george marshall had recommended , selected friend joseph stilwell lead allied command in europe , lead allied invasion... pearl harbor changed that, , marshall decided stilwell best serve allied interests in china-burma-india theater... stilwell replaced eisenhower. stilwell least, bummed out... having prestigious military command in career snatched away.
