What city in the US has more counterculture like hippies ,punks ,gothic so on?

first -- perception san diego conservative -- it's outdated. 40 years ago, before east coast transplants moved sd, yeah, conservative. no longer -- new mayor liberal, sd's first democratic mayor in decades. city changing.

san diego has counter-culture elements in beach towns (ocean beach, imperial beach, south pacific beach) ; hipsters in south park, north park ; goths in hillcrest, normal heights ; etc. lot of musicians san diego: eddie vedder example.

nevertheless -- san diego isn't choice.

misperception san francisco "the" epicenter hipness. no question, sf attracts lot of bohemians, misfits, , free spirits. reputation (like san diego), dated. haight ashbury mecca, held formal burial hippies in 1967, outpouring of music era, , bands spawned, has seen better days.

don't visit seattle anymore. no question emerald city progressive, organized rallies , open-mindedness towards ethnic populations. , yes, grunge movement , lesser known rock , roll museum lends nostalgia. seattle, however, bit more caffeinated mellow. rain puts citizenry on edge.

portland? portlanders health-minded, , eco-oriented. biking , walking paths national models. tune "portlandia" (the tv program), hint of city. portland hippies, or hipsters?
