Why my computer is so slow it makes me go to sleep?


pc hp compaq nx6110 intel celeron processor running windows xp.when connected net,it works damn slow , whole system goes unresponsive.when open internet explorer,after few moments,it stops responding commands.when exit,a message gets displayed follows-"this programme not responding.to return windows , check status of problem,click cancel.to end programme,you may lose unsaved data,click end now"
when click end now,nothing happens returns same old unresponsive state.what do???
want know if upgrading windows 7 improve performence.note:when pc first bought,it ran windows 98.
please me.
