Can a 2 gang surface mount box be mounted over a 1 gang recessed box?


have recessed single gang electrical box in drywall wall in garage. box has 20a 110v receptacle in it. want add additional receptacles thought mount 2 gang metal surface mount box "over" single gang box in wall , bring steel conduit off side of 2 gang box , run 2 additional 2 gang surface mount boxes down length of wall.

issue want solve having continually plug , unplug things when need use them. there plenty of current in existing 20a circuit concurrent load additional receptacles overloading circuit not concern. i.e. although going 2 12 outlets, concurrent load not increasing.

don't have 2 gang metal box handy, not sure if there way mount 1 of them on existing 1 gang box.
