Doctor Who fans- explain please?


when doctor regenerates, every cell in body changes. remains same person, new appearance , new personality. keeps memories past-selves. each "version" of doctor different, said personality changes same man.
doctor not human, timelord. "timelord" species, not title. alien. "regeneration" trick timelords have cheat death. when dying, instead of dying, can regenerate. however, if regeneration interuptted, timelord can die good.

is "doctor" same person, in different human forms? i'm extremely confused i've started @ 9th doctor's series. doctor different people, or same person? if makes sense.
