Can you be a performer AND a choral director?


well, music major, discipline voice, , wondering if there way choral director , opera singer? have been singing in choirs since 3rd grade, , have discovered passion art songs , singing classical , opera since 10th grade , now, freshman in college. know it's still early, love solo singing , love choral music. how should approach becoming both? high school teacher told me stay music performance major , take advantage of lessons , then, take couple of conducting classes , music ed , graduate b.m in vocal performance , credentials. how approach subject? i'm sure other's have considered doing well.
