name india may refer either region of greater india (the indian subcontinent), or contemporary republic of india contained therein. term derived name of sindhu (indus river) , has been in use in greek since herodotus (4th century bc). term appears in old english in 9th century, , again in modern english since 17th century.

republic of india has 3 principal short names, in both official , popular english usage, each of historically significant. 3 designated single entity comprising modern nations of indian subcontinent.
