How uncelebratory is residue from a previous year?


discarded

upon sparkling sand lay
awash in salt , ocean spray.

seems serene in midday sleep
peace purchased steep
severed hopes , silent tears
wrung dry dint of useless years.

left behind no regrets—
perpetual pain , open threats.
relief late defeat
until cycle complete.

each summer's constant sun still burns
above screech of squabbling terns
, though tides wax , wane
still rise , fall ease no pain.

still bathed in ocean spray today
sand remembers lay.
