soldiers can't swim save themselves,
not if carrying gun or heavy equipment.
they'd lucky if cross 10 meter wide river, let alone english channel

invading army needs ships or planes.
saved england few times in past.

by islands, mean small ones britain, why such great powers germany or france have hard time invading?
