yes, can absolutely ask you. i've had employer ask copy of w2 1) verify employed company , 2) verify salary. husband had potential employer run irs report showed employers hadn't put on resume. needless say, didn't job. don't lie if @ possible. if must lie, 1 can't proven.

large companies use employment verification company/website called work number. verify dates of employment , salary (if provided them)
