How does a chemist know if a reaction is a Redox reaction?

redox.. acronym reduction oxidation reaction.

and..
reduction defined "reduction in charge"
and..
oxidation opposite of reduction... "increase in charge"

******
chemists decide if reaction redox reaction looking @ charges of reactants vs products. if there change in charge, reaction considered redox

*****
example..
c + o2 ---> co2

c has 0 charge on left
o in o2 has 0 charge (zero oxidation state)
c in co2 has +4 oxidation state
o in co2 has -2 oxidation state.

so.. c went 0 +4 , oxidized
... . o went 0 -2 , reduced

therefore reaction redox rxn.

*********
notes..
(1).. oxygen isn't requirement redox rxn
(2).. can't have reduction without oxidation , vice versa... because charges change due electrons being transfered. electrons come 1 atom , go another. right?
(3).. distinguish between redox , other types of reactions because in redox rxns, must balance electrons being transfered. there difference between balancing redox , non-redox reactions.
