Anyone know what could cause the smell of burning plastic?

cooking in oven morning , noticed mild smell of burning plastic, didn't think of it. later, turned on stove , smell got worse , bad couldn't breathe without coughing. checked outlets in kitchen, nothing burning or damaged--nor have cooked plastic near oven/stove. have ideas of causing smell/toxicity in air? i'm concerned because have puppy in household , not want him inhaling these fumes. in advance.
