Is it safe to make a fire pit in my backyard?

lay down bricks a tight solid square floor of 5ftx5ft
, create pit of 2ft length x2ft width x1ft height in center of square cement , bricks .
edge of square 15 ft house, 6 ft separate garage , 6 ft small tree
backyard has lawn , few trees..leaves fall , grasses dry sometime.... [ sparks fly of fire ]

if used without being "stupid" safe? precautions should take while building prevent fire ...have done before ?
