order of british empire has 5 grades, are, in ascending order:
member (mbe)
officer (obe)
commander (cbe)
knight/dame commander (kbe or dbe)
knight/dame grand cross (gbe)
top 2 carry title 'sir' or 'dame'. lower 3 entitle put letters after name.

elton john made cbe in 1995, still 'mr elton john, cbe' until made knight bachelor in 1998 - separate honour.

i never noticed female got knighted called "dame" besides judi dench. kate appointed cbe means dame too, right?
