How do I recover lost files from a corrupted portable hard drive?


purchased toshiba 1tb portable external hard drive xmas , decided back-up old computer before replaced os. while conducting said up, computer restarted “system update” purposes , attempted abort, unsuccessfully. once computer restarted unable access hard drive , received error message of either ‘unreadable or corrupted files’. had similar issue sony bloogie (hd cam) getting wiped clean in x-ray machine @ airport , i’ve paid recovery software (such stellar phoenix photo recovery) didn’t work. weary of making more purchases. advice anyone?
