Teach myself guitar? Can't produce note when holding down string?


i've read 1 of first beginner mistakes press down strings hard. thought problem since when pressed string down , strummed, there absolutely no sound. there's sound not note - sound of plastic pick hitting nylon strings.

tried not putting pressure @ all. touched finger string. again not holding down. literally have finger resting on top of string , getting same result ; no note. flat sound of plastic on nylon.

doing wrong?
