Can I remove collar ties from the attic?

moved home , make better use of attic. there appear collar ties every 6 joists. prevent walking comfortably through attic. 1x8 pieces of wood held on 4 nails on each side. needed? if take them out affect stability @ all? don't seem under tension or weight bearing. total height of attic @ peak 5 feet.
