How does a radio transmitter work? Help with novel?


hi,

i'm writing book underground army , wanted them able use radio transmitters in order communicate other divisions of army situated across globe. problem don't understand how radio transmitters work , can't find explanation online explains in way idiot can understand (hee hee). need know few things:

1) can radio transmitter used in desert?

2) it's signal strong enough reach around world?

3) army have tune radios same frequency or each division have it's own frequency?
