Why are people from the United States called Americans if calling the United States America is wrong?


i'm not ranting or i'm looking answer :p (and along lines of 'because americans idiots' not count n_n.)
yeah i've heard people other countries call people united states americans too, guess it's not our ego or whatever people might say. why people in united states called americans, , not people mexico, canada, or country in americas? because know not here first. , if we're not supposed called americans @ all, supposed called? united states-ans maybe? :3
