Why is Cl2 Cl-Cl but O2 is O=O?


subscript "2" doesn't mean double bond present, means 2 atoms present (in molecule). in same way, o3 (ozone) has 3 oxygen atoms in molecule - doesn't contain triple bonds.

in simple terms, oxygen needs gain sharing 2 electrons gain complete outer shell of 8 electrons, combining oxygen atom via double bond. chlorine needs gain sharing 1 electron complete outer shell, can achieve via double bond.

double bond concept convenient approximation sake of simplicity, , molecular orbital theory give more detailed model. no need go here.
