What kinds of metal can a soldering iron melt?
not much. copper, aluminum, gold, silver, , iron have pretty decently high melting points.
zinc low one. @ ~840°f, melts on stovetop.
lead melts in 600°f range.
solders specially formulated alloys. instance, aluminum , copper solders have high zinc content because zinc dissolves both of them @ around 950°f, forming solid solutions when solidify @ room temp. (think sugar dissolving in water.)
these solder alloys listed "low melt" , used low temp soldering of kind used in light hobbywork.
tin , brass , bronze solders listed low melt well.
no iron solders exist low melt. lowest iron solders in 2,600°f range. iron forms solid solutions aluminum, manganese, carbon, , magnesium. of have high melting points. carbon being highest of elements , aluminum being 1250°f, above hobby soldering temps. you'd use tig, mig, or arc.
