lifted feet, hands still,
poised, , down hill
dart, heedful mind;
air goes in wind.

swifter , yet more swift, 5
till heart mighty lift
makes lungs laugh, throat cry:—
'o bird, see; see, bird, fly.

'is this, joy?
o bird, i, though boy 10
golden moment share
feathery life in air!'

say, heart, there aught this
in world full of bliss?
'tis more skating, bound 15
steel-shod level ground.

speed slackens now, float
awhile in airy boat;
till, when wheels scarce crawl,
feet treadles fall. 20

alas, longest hill
must end in vale; still,
climbs toil, wheresoe'er,
shall find wings waiting there.
