Carpet vs Carpet squares over existing tile floor?


moved 1st floor/basement apartment. has tile floors wich nice extremely cold walk on in winter. thinking putting carpet down until stumbled across carpet tiles in home depot. since im renting dont want damage current ceramic tile floor, should lay down regular carpet or use carpet tiles? don't care grout lines , dont want glued floor. doesnt need best job more myself. if lay regular carpet need padding? or if use carpet tiles, kind of barrier should have between current floor , carpet proctect ceramic tiles?
