Going to China. Bring dslr?


going china in summer. third time going , i've been told should not bring shows have lots of money. staying in guangzhou, traveling hong kong , shenzhen. if people america sees these cities, define them "ghetto" , don't blame them. it's pretty shady in parts , people aren't friendly.
however, seems waste not take nice pictures while i'm there. tried bringing simple point , shoot last time went , quality horrible. time debating on whether bring dslr or buy 4/3 camera , take there. saving money buy nicer lens dslr.
advice?
